Infrastructure
The campus of the School of Engineering of University of Thessaly is located at the entrance of the city from the Athens-Thessaloniki highway and is easily accessible by car/KTEL bus and by train. The KTEL station and the OSE station are at a distance of 5 and 10 minutes on foot, respectively. The campus initially consists of the buildings of the former Papariga factory, which were renovated, and the new building of the Department of Planning and Regional Development.
The Department of Architectural Engineering is housed in the building of the former Papariga factory since the academic year 2001-2002. The building of the former machine shop of the Papariga factory, built in 1938 and renovated by the University in 1990, currently houses the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The renovated building of the Papariga factory (foundry and raw material warehouse) currently houses the Department of Civil Engineering.
The building of the Department of Planning and Regional Development is the first new construction in the campus. It was built in the context of the development of the University of Thessaly to house new departments and started operating in the academic year 1999-2000.
In 2001, the University of Thessaly purchased a plot of land at the junction of Athens and Sekeri streets, on which new facilities were erected, with a total area of 3883.96 square meters, for the needs of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
The new facilities of the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering are under construction. The building of the Department of Civil Engineering will have a total area of 17,603 m2, including 17 classrooms, a reading room, 15 research laboratories, 44 staff offices, auditoriums with a capacity of 105 and 250 seats, as well as auxiliary, common areas and underground parking. The building of the Department of Mechanical Engineering will have a total area of 14,855 m2, including 15 classrooms, a reading room, 10 laboratories, 50 offices, an auditorium with a capacity of 135 seats, auxiliary, common areas and a parking lot with 82 spaces.
The two new buildings, in combination with the facilities of the old campus and the new building that houses the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering in Sekeri Street, will form the new campus in Volos.
