Department of Mechanical Engineering
The Department was founded in 1985 under the name “Department of Industrial Mechanical Engineering”, as one of the three academic Departments of the then newly founded School of Production Sciences of the University of Thessaly. In 2009, the Department was renamed “Department of Mechanical Engineering”.
Today, the Department is a dynamically developing, but also mature, Department, since it has been operating successfully for 34 years. Currently, 20 faculty members serve in the Department, with administrative, educational and technical support provided by 3 members of the Laboratory Teaching Staff, 10 members of the administrative staff and 4 members of the Special Technical and Laboratory Staff. Also, the Department employs a significant number of scientific associates and PhD candidates. The Department is housed in one of the buildings of the former Papariga factory in Pedion Areos, which was suitably designed. It also uses additional classrooms and spaces in the prefabricated buildings of the Polytechnic School adjacent to the Port Zone. The University of Thessaly has started a decade ago the process for the construction of new building facilities for the Department, but this was stopped due to the financial crisis. The new building facilities will undoubtedly allow the further development of the educational and research activities of the Department.
The purpose of the Department is to provide high-level education in the science of Mechanical Engineering, to produce new innovative knowledge and know-how through fundamental and applied research and to transfer the produced know-how for the benefit of society, locally, nationally and internationally. The curriculum aims to prepare Mechanical Engineers with high technical training, able to advance their science and its various applications, to study, understand and solve scientific and technological problems, to adapt to a constantly evolving economic and technological environment, to contribute to the economic and technological development of the country and the international community, but also to conduct research on innovative processes, constructions, devices and products and to connect this research with the real needs of society. At the same time, the curriculum aims to create integrated and conscious citizens, as well as the cultivation of important skills, such as the ability to communicate, autonomous access to knowledge, the possibility of collaborations with other specialties and the management of personnel and projects.
The Diploma awarded by the Department is a single and indivisible postgraduate degree (integrated master), in the specialty of Mechanical Engineering, level 7 of the National and European Qualifications Framework.
