Department of Planning and Regional Development
The Department of Planning and Regional Development Engineering of the University of Thessaly began its operation in 1989 and is the first Department in Greece to offer a University Diploma in Planning and Regional Development. Graduates of the Department are engineering graduates. The Department offers a five-year undergraduate study program, three-semester full-time and five-semester part-time postgraduate study programs, a Greek-French postgraduate study program and a Ph.D. The subject of Planning and Regional Development concerns the planning, regulation and balanced and sustainable development of space. It includes a large number of subjects, which share the spatial dimension as they concern specific areas, smaller or larger: a district, a city, a zone, a region, a country or even a group of countries. In the context of these issues, a wide range of individual objects is developed, mainly the organization and form of space, development processes, environmental issues and social processes. The Department’s curriculum is designed with an orientation to analysis, design and decision-making for the solution of spatial problems from an engineer’s perspective. This requires a strong technical background. The Department’s students are trained in Economics, Development, Environment, Management, Analysis and Problem Solving methods using specialized tools and techniques. The Department has the important potential, as a new department, to create the necessary mix of social and positive scientific fields through modern education methods. The teaching staff of the Department is specialized in various fields of knowledge which include Urban, Urban and Spatial Planning, Economic and Regional Science, Architecture, Geography, Mathematics, Computer Science, Image Processing and Remote Sensing, Political Science Engineering, and Social Sciences. Many members of the department have served in various public administration positions and have received distinctions for their research, publications and contribution to their scientific subjects. Thessaly. Similar relationships have been established with various other local bodies (development, research, etc.). The collaborations that have taken place between the agencies and the Department are an important factor in the positive integration of the University into the local community and, at the same time, offer important practical opportunities for the students of the Department.The European and international dimension of the Department is also strengthened by the relatively large number of invited speakers in the context of the undergraduate and postgraduate study programs. Also, the Department implemented and is implementing a series of research programs with European or international content and funded by the EU or other foreign bodies. Some of these programs are transnational in nature.
